Fresh tracks in the backcountry is every snow seekers' dream

Colin Pellerin

There is something special about sharing deep untouched snow with your closest friends. It really doesn’t matter where you are from, how far you have travelled, or how experienced you are. When you take that first plunge into blower snow, and your heart skips a beat, we all end up with the same big smiles on our faces.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s time to check out the Powder Highway.

Yes, snow and mountains can be found in all corners of the globe, but here in Canada I could argue we have some of the very best. I’ve spent most of my life chasing great adventures which has taken me to some incredible locations. But no matter where I go, I always end up back in British Columbia, along the Powder Highway.

Home to one of the largest skiable areas in the world, the Powder Highway has endless opportunities for you to enjoy deep Champagne snow. The birthplace of heli and Cat skiing, with over 80 ski locations, it also boasts eight world-renowned ski resorts.

With so many backcountry options at your ski tips, you may wonder why someone would want to stay at a resort. But the reality is that these resorts make an incredible base camp and the perfect transition to the backcountry kingdom.

Fernie Alpine Resort is a great example. With 142 runs, this snow playground caters to the entire family. All ages and skill levels can find a hill for their ability here. With 50 feet of snow annually and 2,500 skiable acres, Fernie boasts some of the best glades and bowls that you can find in North America. Add to that 1,500-plus acres of untouched backcountry-style snow accessed just a short jaunt away from groomers.

This resort, like the others along the Powder Highway, are in the same terrain as all the backcountry havens. With world-leading avalanche safety, ski patrol and staff, Fernie Alpine Resort, along with its Powder Highway counterparts, have a little slice of something for everyone

The reality is that no matter where you go, you’re guaranteed to find great times and before you know it you’ll be smiling ear to ear. Multiply that happiness by bringing along your family and friends. You’ll quickly realized we are blessed to have snow and mountains, all adding up to good times in our backyard.
