Skiing Troll Resort feels like home, even as it grows

Troll Ski Resort, BC  Heading east of Quesnel on the Barkerville Highway, the 40-minute drive to Troll Resort falls nothing short of magical, with its gold-dust history and rugged scenery leading you off into solitude. For Olivia Newton and Erin Gagne, it always feels like coming home.

As Erin put it, "I’ve been coming here since 1996—30 years now! I have friends that are still here from 30 years ago."

Reflecting on the drive, Olivia adds, “It’s a beautiful, winding drive. You kind of feel like you’re entering Narnia.”

HIT PLAY > to see how Troll Resort will grow on you

Watch Troll is on the grow on YouTube.

With an abundance of wildlife to view along the way such as moose, and sometimes the famous mountain caribou, you might even get the bonus of a beautiful gold rush sunset to take you home.

But beware! When you first walk through the doors of the family-built Troll Resort lodge, the intoxicating warm smell of fresh cinnamon buns will tempt your senses.

With years to perfect their golden recipe, this sweet treat is the true fuel for a day of carving the slopes, and one of Troll’s signature features.

Heading out onto the mountain, those warm, friendly vibes carry into the ski day.

When you start your day with a Troll cinnamon bun, you know it's going to be a good one.

“You are just accepted by everyone,” says Erin, “You know that you’re going to find someone to ski with here at troll,” always making the t-bar rides enjoyable.

Each run at Troll gives you a unique perspective of the Cariboo Mountains that were combed meticulously by the gold miners of old. In fact, the whole valley is rich in history at every turn.

Keep this in mind as you climb aboard the various T-bars to choose from, giving skiers of all skill sets the opportunity for an amazing day!

The Yellow T is your ride up the playful Bunny Hill, whereas the Red T will take you up to the main level.

From there you can catch a ride up the Silver T for some untouched powder on the weekends.

The Black T, just opened in 2025-26, offers you a ride up the Pinegrove Expansion side of the mountain, opening up new black runs and powder options to explore.

T-bars give you time to disconnect from distractions and reconnect with friends.

Riding t-bars may seem like a throwback to some, but Erin explains, “I find that unplugged feeling for me. I really get to connect with my friends on the ride up the t-bar for 12 minutes and catch up with what they’ve been up to in their life.

It’s a great way to just kind of have that time together, one on one.”

From great skiing to tasty food to friendly faces, Troll will grow on you

After a great day of ripping it up with friends, you can hang out in the lodge in front of the cozy rock fireplace with a warm cinnamon bun, or grab one to go.

Olivia adds, “We love a tailgate barbecue at Troll—the cinnamon buns, a little hot chocolate, maybe a little bevvy.”

The poutine is pretty amazing as well!

For an added experience to your trip, if you hit Troll at the right time, you may also get a chance to watch the Gold Rush Trail Sled Dog Mail Run happening this year on February 6-8, kicking off at Troll on Friday, February 6.

Historically, this was how mail was delivered in northern BC. Witness it this February at Troll.

One of the other unique qualities Troll holds is its inexplicable ability to reunite long-lost family and friends on the ride up the mountain.

Oliva and Erin laugh, “You go up the t-bar with a stranger, and the next thing you know you find out you have a new cousin.”

This is part of what makes Troll a place to call home, no matter where you are from, what level of experience you have. Troll is inclusive, inviting, and as these women say, “The best place on earth.”
