Numbers don’t lie – see how the snow is piling up at Western Canadian Ski Resorts

Every time a season changes, the meteorologists, the farmers almanac and people with arthritic knees forecast what the weather will be. One thing we know in the ski industry is – numbers don’t lie. Let’s take a fast look at what bragging rights our top five resorts in Western Canada have for preseason snowfall.

By the end of a regular season, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort usually sees 731 cm (24 feet) of snow. Before the first gondola left the base on the preview weekend on Dec 2, over 427 cm (14 feet) of snow had fallen. Everyone who took in the weekend was amazed at the conditions. Find out how the bonus weekend went here.

Whistler Blackcomb opened the gates a week before Kicking Horse with 401 cm (13 feet) of snow-to-date. In the last 7 days 60 cm landed. Doc Pow and ApresWheeler were there to test the snow. Asking them what it was like was like talking to kids at Christmas. Check out their findings here.

Revelstoke has been getting slammed by the same storms as Whistler and Kicking Horse and comes in third for the snow-to-date accumulation of 397 cm of sweet snow. The resort opened this weekend with piles of powder up top.

Banff Sunshine Resort opened in early November to the delight of many Albertans. To date the resort has seen almost as seen close to 3 metres of snow come down – that’s 1/3 of a regular season already. In the last week, 60 cm has fallen. Just think of the freshies!

Fernie Alpine Resort has almost the same snow-to-date as Sunshine with 293 cm landing this season to date. They pushed back the opening weekend celebrations due to the warm weather that swept the province, but they are well on their way to another epic season. Read about booking an epic trip to Fernie here.

So, as we march into December with a week of sun and warm temperatures forecast for all of BC and Alberta, stand outside and shake your fist at the sky. We want Ullr to dump more powder!
