Are they nuts? Nakiska opens in October

You gotta love when a day out in the mountains makes it into the history books. This past weekend, Oct. 26 and 27 was a record-making weekend for those who got to enjoy the earliest opening for a ski resort within the Bow Valley - ever.

Yes, the chance to ski and ride arrived extra early in the Rockies my friends, and I am stoked to tell you and nicely surprised to see that it is snowy up in those mountains when I hit up the slopes at Nakiska Ski Resort, Sunday, Oct 27.

Much of my morning was spent pinching myself, thinking “This can’t be October." But sure enough, it was. Those on the hill this weekend were met with very snowy conditions as you can see here. So much snow, we were skiing and riding in the Monster Glades, a rare opportunity this time of year. Sure, you had to “ski aware" as we always do, but even Sunday morning the snow gods blessed us with a bit more of that champagne powder that we all love.

For Eric Guglielmi, he was hopping into the unknown this season when he and his buddy Adam made a "sight unseen” purchase of a Nakaskia ski pass for the 2020 winter season. Not only was it Guglielmi’s first day ever at Nakiska but it was also the earliest he had ever been on skis by a long shot.

For Shannon and Jamie, of Black Diamond, no late-night Halloween party was going to pull them away from missing opening day in the Rockies. It was easy for them; they just keep the costumes on and go riding!

Nakiska, like many of the mountain resorts across the Rockies were blessed with an early snowfall, nicely filling in the runs off the Gold Chair Express.

It's proper winter around here with more expected through the next week.

So good to be back in the Rockies breathing in the mountain views and the chance to appreciate some of the best scenery in the world.

Calgary’s Andy Fontaine and Jason Derrien sure weren’t going to miss the chance to make history. “So stoked on the conditions,” says Fontaine. “Its so exciting when you can get out for turns in October, certainly a first for me!"

As you can see, it's really snowy up at Nakiska right now, similar to many of the ski resorts across the Rockies, which are all reporting excellent early snow conditions, which they haven’t seen in a while.
