Located just 10 minutes from Lake Louise Ski Area, on the doorstep of three National Parks, is The Great Divide Lodge.
LAKE LOUISE, AB — In Western Canada we are blessed with spectacular locales: lakes, mountains, and views served up with equally memorable restaurants, amenities, and accommodations. One of those amazing accommodation options is nestled deep in the Canadian Rockies: Lake Louise's The Great Divide Lodge.
What used to be staff accommodations for those lucky enough to be working at Lake Louise Ski Area—only a 10 min drive up the highway—is now a comfortable and affordable base camp for those chasing the POW. It also happens to be on the doorstep of three National Parks, as well as the Wapta Traverse, arguably North America’s top hut-to-hut backcountry experience. On a recent trip out to Lake Louise I spent the night and scored the lowdown on what I call “The Great Provide Lodge.”
When it comes to comfortable, affordable accommodations in the Canadian Rockies, it doesn't get much better than The Great Divide Lodge.
“It’s our goal to bring back affordable skiing,” said Sandy Best, Lake Louise Ski Area’s director of public relations and hotels, who manages the property. With a package that includes a lift ticket and a room for pretty much the same price as a lift ticket alone, the Great Divide is affordable and then some.
The first thing they did just before opening the lodge back up for the public was to make it a whole lot more accommodating. This includes hard wood floors, a new comfy pub—The Kicking Horse Lounge—and a chef who can not only put out tasty food, but also at a price that leaves lots in the bank account for those après options on the mountain.
“We offer a fast and free shuttle direct to the lift so you can ski hard and drink hard,” said Best. Lake Louise has a host of après options, including the infamous Powder Keg Lounge and the Kokanee Cabin. Both feature bands, beautiful people, and beer. In the spring, the deck is the perfect place to take in the magic that is this destination. As Best describes it, “you know God is a skier because he created this place.”
Their plans will continue to see The Great Divide Lodge evolve. Those plans include continued package innovations that are not just Lake Louise Resort Ski Resort-focused, but also heli-skiing-, hiking-, canoeing-, and rafting-focused. Each of these options comes with a great meal and a good sleep.
