“I’m out of shape, my legs are burning," yells Chris Wheeler, aka @ApresWheeler, as he rips down Whistler opening day, Nov. 17.

Oh yeah, the first day on the slopes - you gotta love it. And, regardless of what shape Wheeler was in – he wasn’t going to miss opening day.

“I grew up skiing Whistler and as a kid, I skied the mountain with my dad who was a member of ski patrol,” says Wheeler.

So, this wasn’t Wheeler’s first opening, but he says its certainly one of the best.

“Since that crazy 2007/08 season, I have not seen this much snow up here, so early. It’s the best coverage I have seen on Whistler in over a decade. To be skiing powder on the first run of the first day of the season on Whistler is pretty epic.”

Chris, (@ApresWheeler) is stoked on opening day!

Whistler has been buries in snow this past few weeks, seeing just short of 200 cms of snow in the past seven days. It’s winter 360 on the mountain, with a mid-mountain base of 182 cms (that’s six feet of snow).

“You know the usual early season scenario, you might see some little trees or sticks (some call ‘em snow snakes”) come through? There is none of that up here, its full-on winter,” says Wheeler.

Consider Whistler Blackcomb’s snow history page to see how years compare.

As a long-time local, Wheeler is pretty thrilled with the excitement around opening day, “The overall stoke was nuts this morning, it makes me wonder if anyone actually works in Whistler?!”

“You know this feeling. I get it every year. Looking out over the mountain on that first ride on the chairlift, I got giddy, with an inhale and an exhale of emotion. Being back on the skis is such a good thing.”
