VERNON, BC - It takes a couple of years, but most of us come to the realization that Christmas is not about material things, but sharing the spirit of the season with family and friends.
I’ve found a spot that offers more holiday spirit than you can shake a cinnamon stick at - Silver Star Mountain Resort. Oh, and it also happens to be a world-class ski hill too.
The December event calendar at Silver Star reads like a checklist of all things Christmas-related. Sleigh rides? Check. Carolling? Check.
Here’s the when and where’s for everything.
Photos with Santa – December 20 to 24:
It’s a good thing Santa wears a warm suit because he’ll be outside, in the village, ready to listen to everyone’s Christmas wishes. Look for him between noon and and 1 p.m.
Gingerbread House Building – December 21:
For this craft, it doesn’t matter what the end product looks like – it will still taste great. Head to the Town Hall Eatery at 6:30 p.m. for this fun, family event.
Christmas Concert with Raquel Warchol – December 21:
This all ages show set in the N.A.T.C. in Vernon showcases local musician Raquel Warchol. Candles and a fireplace set the stage for the sounds of Christmas. Show takes place from 7 – 9 p.m.
Christmas Carolling – December 22:
What’s a ski village without carollers? At 7 p.m., the Vernon Community Singers provide the soundtrack for your walk through a winter wonderland. If you follow their voices, you’ll end up at the N.A.T.C. for a full-fledged concert at 8 p.m.

Torchlight Parade and Fireworks – December 24:
Whether you’re watching or participating, this is a super cool experience as 100-150 people make their way down the mountain by torchlight from 5:30 – 6 p.m. Much oooing and ahhhhing will follow as fireworks light up the sky. And what’s the only act that can follow that? Santa. He’ll be in the centre of the village from 6-7 p.m. handing out gifts to all the good little skiers and boarders.
Smith Grudge Match – December 28:
Smith Optics and Silver Star have partnered up for this rail jump event open to both boarders and skiers. Spectators can expect to see some sick moves and participants can win some serious cash prizes and swag.
World Snowboard Day – December 30:
It’s true, Snowboarders now have an official day. To celebrate, Silver Star is offering specials on lessons plus lots of giveaways.
New Year’s Eve torchlight parade and fireworks – December 31:
Here’s another opportunity to be part of a breathtaking show of lights. In the village, visitors to Silver Star can enjoy a carnival-like atmosphere with fire jugglers, storytellers and artists using snow as their canvas.
These are just the highlights, but there’s always something going on at Silver Star, says event manager Johanne Rene.
“After a day on the hill you can check out Tube Town or the climbing wall, or even play Minute To Win It at The Saloon.”
Silver Star also offers mini snowmobile tours, nighttime snowshoeing, ice skating and cross country skiing. But, as Rene says, “If after a full day on the hill, you just want to sit back and be entertained, then find a spot in the village and let the artists and musicians come to you.”
A visit to Silver Star will get you in the holiday spirit, but it’s also a celebration of all things winter. Participate in as many activities as you like, or just slow down and enjoy the sights and sounds of this charming resort.
Silver Star is also offering its awesome My1Pass - a unique all-inclusive pass that gives you access to six different winter sports at Silver Star, so that you never run out of fun things to do while visiting.
