REVELSTOKE, BC — In its second year of operations, Revelstoke Mountain Resort has quickly taken the crown as one of North America’s gnarliest and most exciting ski and snowboard destinations. If you haven’t caught any of the hype, you haven’t been paying attention.

Serious workout

With over a whopping 1,700 metre (5,620 feet) vertical, the biggest of any resort on the continent, many wobbly-legged snow seekers find themselves unable to make the bell-to-bell call from opening to close. "I’ve heard of people who get five runs in their entire day and they’re spent," said Brady Beruschi, general manager of the One Twelve restaurant in downtown Revelstoke.

With each run tallying 1,524 m (5,000 ft.) you could rack up a total of 7,620 m (25,000 ft.) over those five runs, I guess it’s easy to understand why people aren’t making the closing bell.

With runs that seem endless, I’m guessing you’ll do as I did – stop more than a few times saying to yourself, "When does this run end?"

Some stellar views

A green run known as The Last Spike winds its way down Mount MacKenzie and is over 15 kilometres (9 miles) long, ranking it one of North America’s longest runs. On route down this monster, you’ll be met with epic views of the Columbia Valley and the Monashee Mountain ranges. Below is the Columbia River, flanked by the town of 5,000 inhabitants that call Revelstoke home.

And if these views and vertical options within the lift accessed terrain aren’t keeping you amused, take advantage of Revelstoke’s mechanized opportunities.  Revelstoke Cat Skiing and Selkirk Tangiers Heli-Ski both operate right out of the developing base area of the resort. Plans for the developing include a chopper pad in the centre of it.

Resort makes you want to stay

“It’s a real enthusiast’s mountain,” said Tara Sutherland, a waiter at the Village Idiot, a prime après spot in town. “Some call it Revel-stuck just because of the town’s appeal. Once you get into this snow that’s good all the time, you don’t want to go any place else. I was in Calgary and had come out here a couple of times to ski – those times were the best, so I just made the call that this is where I needed to be.”
