This season we welcome Susanne Dobler and Resorts Canadian Rockies and Tourism Kimberley to deliver our audience a new blog post twice a month through the season. Stay tuned for the next release.
The sun sets behind the mountain, but the trails will remain open until 8:30 p.m. for those skiers of the night.
A healthy work/life balance is something I place a lot of value on. Having always worked in the hospitality industry, I have been lucky to have a schedule with a healthy dose of “me time” mornings and many bluebird days to enjoy. I recently joined the Monday to Friday workforce, restricting my daytime leisure activities to weekends.
Lucky for me, a five-minute drive from my front door takes me to the quad chair at Kimberley Alpine Resort (KAR), my local ski hill and also one that boasts the longest night ski run in North America.
KAR is one B.C.’s eight ski resorts that offers night skiing to us 9-5ers wanting to get a few laps in after pushing paper all day.
Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5:30-8:30 by the light of the moon (okay, and a few high wattage lights) skiers and boarders enjoy freshly groomed snow, clean, crisp air and a breathtaking view of the surrounding valley at night. I can’t think of a better way to unwind.
If you still feel like being social after a few night turns, the Stemwinder never disappoints, with live music and entertainment most nights.
If cross-country skiing is your forte, you can get your nighttime Nordic fix as well. Just a short drive from KAR, the Kimberley Nordic Centre lights up a 3.3 km loop every night of the week. I find this one of the most serene ways to process the day. Look out for the moose on the trails!
In Kimberley we really don’t stop playing outside when the sun goes down.
