This season we welcome Susanne Dobler and Resorts Canadian Rockies and Tourism Kimberley to deliver our audience a new blog post twice a month through the season. Stay tuned for the next release.
Forget the rail park at Kimberley Alpine Resort, you'll want to be seeing the madness of mailbox and park bench grinds in the transformed Platzl.
Kimberley's quaint and peaceful Platzl is getting all shook up. The organizers of “First Saturdays” Arts and Cultural series, have kicked up the action in a big way. On February 15th they are introducing Kimberley’s first ever Rail Jam: Mayhem in the Platzl.
Forget High Tea or Nature Walks! This event will showcase some of our most talented skiers and snowboarders who want to shred downtown. Snow will be contoured for the event but a rail jam includes anything in the path of the athlete. Mailboxes, street benches, railings and walls are all fair game. With that said – maybe watch where you park the car! They will be getting RAD between the hours of 6 to 9 p.m., right here in the center of the Platz, an area usually reserved for restaurants and retail. Interesting venue I'd say!
Here's a breakdown of what to expect:
The Rail Jam takes place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., starting in front of Black Bear continuing down to the gazebo (Deer Park Ave). A live DJ will be performing and lights and images will be projected on the street and buildings.
Fashion Mayhem starts at 7 p.m., in the former Fields building (196 Spokane St) and will showcase local designers and retailers.
Mark Creek Lions Club will host a warming station as well to ensure people are enjoying themselves in case there is a continuation of this cold snap.
The town and local community are kicking in great prizes for the athletes including the first Mayhem Trophy! Wouldn’t it be cool to be the first name on that? Entry is only 20 bucks so if you are interested in ripping down the Platzl without getting into trouble – sign up!
Free Transportation will be provided by SIMPLY KIMBERLEY - Pick up every 30 minutes from 5:00pm to 6:30pm and return shuttle from 8:30pm to 10pm.
Loop will be: Trickle Cr. Lodge > Dogwood Drive > Kimberley Lodging Co. (reception) > North Star Mountain Village (reception) > Platzl. And repeat.
Consider this the first of many rail jams to come...with sponsors from here to Fernie, this is where to be.
