Whitewater: my morning glory

DOC POW

NELSON, B.C. – Whitewater is a powder-filled playground squirreled away just outside of Nelson, British Columbia, an unspoiled resort that offers a ski experience that's something else. This former playground has become a powder powerhouse with the addition of the new Glory Ridge Chair. This new triple chair, off the back side of the resort, effectively doubles Whitewater's in-bounds skiable terrain and adds a whole lot more excitement to a destination that was already known for epic bowls, shoots, groomers, and glades.

You name ‘em and Whitewater’s seen 'em on the slopes. Journalists from Lonely Planet to Powder Magazine to Ski Canada Magazine have all reported that this destination is something that is truly unique.

Whitewater is a mix of mellow and old school, there really are “no worries” when you get up to this part of the world. The only challenge is if your legs are going to be able to handle the prolonged powder blitz.

If you haven’t been there yet, here are a few reasons why you’ll need to put Whitewater on your list for this season:

  • If you are a powder fan, it’s that light champagne POW that keeps things popping: on average, Whitewater receives 40 FEET in a season. It isn't unusual – it's mostly the norm – to see 10-20 cms a night.
  • If you're a food fan, you can’t resist the Fresh Tracks Cafe. This amazing eatery has been featured in the New York Times and serves up a nationally bestselling cookbook.
  • If you are into finding new and exciting destinations, the town of Nelson is one that you’ll be blown away by. Funky restaurants, one of a kind shops, and signature attractions that will leave you with a serious case of the perma-grins.

For a better understanding of what Whitewater is all about, have a watch to the above video the resort recently published in association with Freeride Entertainment. Pay particular attention around the 5:45 minute mark – it gives me goosebumps every time! For the full meal deal, ski over to www.skiwhitewater.com.

If this might be a road trip idea, check into making it something more and hit Rossland/Red Mountain, too. Have a read to some of their potentials, by consulting SnowSeekers' Red Mountain section. The resorts are within about an hour of each other and the experiencing this combo makes for a legendary week.
