Champion Clara Hughes

Champion Clara Hughes

FRANK PAVLICK

Canada's Sport Poet

Feb. 24, 2010

Saluting Champion Clara Hughes,

Her six Olympic Medals,

All Canada cheers Clara Hughes,

Olympian with pedals.

Say Clara … hear the country roar,

She’s done what no one’s done before,

Could ever someone else do more,

Than Champion … Clara Hughes!

She started out sixteen years old,

From watching Gaetan Boucher,

At ONCE she told herself … that’s IT!

Speed skating is my forte.

Gold, silver, bronze, on bike or skate,

No other ever been so great,

No question, challenge nor debate,

Of Champion … Clara Hughes!

Now thirty-eight years old she grins,

When asked about great effort,

Her excellence in every way,

In daily life and in sport.

And Clara Hughes replies with pride,

It’s nothing I would choose to hide,

I’m a Canadian, cut and dried,

My name is Clara Hughes.

Wrapped in the Flag of Canada,

Her fans admire and cheer her,

2010 Bronze Medal win,

Touches supporters near her.

Wonderful athlete from the start,

Clara of Hughes will now depart,

Taking home with her, every heart,

THANKS, CHAMPION … CLARA HUGHES!
