BANFF - Nobody at Sunshine Village has to wish for a white Christmas – with all the snow coming down it will be the place to celebrate the holiday season. To help you enjoy the season, the resort has planned all sorts of visits, activities and entertainment.

Each weekend before Christmas (Dec. 13,14, 20, 21) the kids can visit and take photos with Santa from 1 to 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Sunshine Mountain Lodge. After the photos, Santa will kick into a pair of skis and meet the kids on the Dell Valley Green run off the Strawberry Lift.
Celebrate the season by staying up at Sunshine Village over the holiday break. As soon as the day crowds are gone the village is yours to discover. Strap on a pair of snowshoes and walk through the village. If the snow conditions are right, go for an old-fashion toboggan ride on traditional maple wood sleds on the special toboggan run. Starting at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve, the kids (and the kids at heart) can meet in the Sunshine Mountain Lodge to make gingerbread houses.
At 7 p.m. slip on your coats, grab a cup of hot chocolate and head outside under the sliver of light from a skinny new moon to watch a torchlight parade. Torchbearers will snake down the Strawberry face with torches illuminating the sky. (If you’d rather stay cosy and warm here’s a secret; sit by the windows in the Chimney Corner Lounge and watch the spectacle while enjoying a hot rum toddy.)
Waking up any day to the sounds of the village getting ready for another day of playing in the snow is always a hit but on Christmas morning it’s even more special. Sleep in and still get first tracks! Sweet!
Guess where Santa is starting his day? After the presents have been delivered on Dec. 25, Santa will take photos with the kids again and go for that run down Dell Valley. How cool is that – hanging out with Santa on Christmas.
Burn off the calories on the slopes because dinner at the lodge will be festive. Roasted prairie turkey with cornbread stuffing with all the fixings will be followed with traditional Christmas pudding drizzled with Tamdhu Whisky sauce.
During the evening, either check out the rustic Mad Tappers pub (adults only) or head to the Chimney Corner Lounge to listen to musicians brought for the holiday. Brandon Oberhamer (Dec 24-26) and Stephen Strain (Dec 27-30) will be there. On New Year’s Eve, Shane Phillips will ring in the New Year at Mad Trappers. There will be loads of entertainment for the entire family from Dec. 24- 31. Ski and shred the day away then as everyone else heads for the ride out, you kick off the gear and head for the hot tub, for some yoga stretches or out for more adventures. The snowshoes are ready any day after the lifts shut down and the toboggans are ready on select evenings. Board games, movies, arcade games and a pool table are available in the activity room.
Start the New Year’s resolutions after all of these festivities, because dinner in the lodge on New Year’s Eve will be a world of fantastic food. East coast Lobster Thermidor, Wild Boar Ravioli, Alberta Beef Tenderloin and Alaska Black Cod are all on the menu. Sounds like a decadent and delicious way to ring in 2015.
