Overlander Trekking & Tours

RICK MACDONNELL

JASPER, AB – I've been writing for SnowSeekers for two seasons now, and one of my favourite experiences – by far – was my tour of Jasper, Alberta's Maligne Canyon. I've never experienced anything like looking up at that 100 foot frozen waterfall. Overlander Trekking & Tours is one of only two companies to offer guided tours of Maligne Canyon, and by focusing on the Maligne as their major experience, Overlander delivers a pretty unforgettable experience.

"Overlander has really become a focused adventure-tour company," said Trevor Lescard, manager of Overlander Trekking & Tours. "Other tour companies in Jasper might offer on a number of different activities, but over the years we've decided to focus on a smaller number of adventure tours to ensure that the customer really gets the most out of each experience."

All of Lescard's guides are certified as hiking guides by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, which certifies them for back-country travel (which Overlander specializes in during the summer months). By focusing on a few spectacular adventures, the Overlander guides deliver a truly first-rate product.

"Along with the Maligne Canyon tours, we also offer snowshoe tours all throughout the Jasper area, depending on the time of year and the weather conditions. All our tours are interpretive, guided tours and our guides are extremely knowledgeable about the activities, the areas, and the history. We like to keep things real casual, so we're always open to questions to make sure people get what they want out of their experience."

Explore like a pro, no experience necessary

The Maligne Canyon tour is a three hour trip, and the tour lasts for two hours. During that time you can expect to explore the 100 foot canyon, see frozen waterfalls, ice caves and you'll even walk on a frozen river. The Overlander crew will equip you with waterproof boots and ice cleats to ensure your safety.

"You get a safe experience, which lets you enjoy yourself that much more. With all of our tours we try to keep driving time low and walking time high. We didn't get into this business to drive around in a van all day. Our guides want to be out there guiding people."

The Maligne Canyon ice walk departs three times daily: 9 am, 1 pm, and 6 pm. Although no experience is necessary, the tour is not recommended for children under seven.

Overlander's snowshoe tours are half-day tours, and depart Tuesdays and Saturdays. Boots, snowshoes, poles, and transportation are provided. Overlander even accommodates those of you who are looking for a guided cross-country tour (half-day).
