EDMONTON, AB – The passion behind Edmonton’s Winter Light Festival is to fuel various winter activities and work to inspire all things winter. In addition to supporting already outstanding winter festivals such as Silver Skate and Ice on Whyte, the festival produces its own experiences for any outdoor adventure lover. This January, experience such an event with the Baba Yaga Trail Adventure.
An adaptation from the Baba Yaga fairy tale, it will be presented along the trail within the Whitemud Park North. Located near Snow Valley along the Whitemud Freeway, the event features stages and characters along the route and it will be up to you to pick between a 1, 2, or 5 km walk or a 6 km night run. Along the route you’ll find mystical lighting, fire monsters, warming tents and teepees hosting entertainment.
According to legend, The Baba Yaga tells the story of Vasilissa, a beautiful maiden with a father who re-marries and now Vasilissa has two evil step sisters. After the warming fire goes out in their house because of the sisters’ incompetence, they send the beautiful maiden into the dark forest to gather light from the witch Baba Yaga, where she runs into all sorts of adventures.
“If you are brave enough to make the hike to the house of Baba Yaga, than you are worth receiving the light.”
The Winter Light Festival has hired actors and commissioned artists to light up the trail and bring animation to it. Whitemud Park gets ambient light from the city sky and with it reflecting off the snow it makes for a really special place to walk through at night.
As part of the festivities, people can also get in the day at Snow Valley for Zipfly sledding, snowshoeing, a demo by the Edmonton Fire Department’s rescue squad and a family Tug-of-War. Over at the Rainbow Valley Campground (on the same land), enjoy free Nordic skiing and a special presentation at the Biathlon Alberta Shooting Range, plus a demonstration by Alpine Club of Canada on assisted ascent and repel demonstrations. This is a hands-on demo, so don’t be afraid to step up.
