Sunshine’s Dash for Cash raises $50,000

Sunshine Village raises $50,000

BANFF, AB – $50,000 was raised at Sunshine Village during last weekend’s Dave Irwin Dash for Cash fundraising event for brain injury research.

All money raised at this 9th annual event goes directly to the Dave Irwin Foundation for Brain Injury. Dave and Lynne Harrison founded the Dave Irwin Foundation for Brain Injury Recovery to assist other brain injury survivors and their families.

More than $310,000 has been raised for the foundation for brain injury awareness, education, research and prevention. Over the years, more than 280 helmets have been given away.

Among the organizations that have received donations are the Powell River Brain Injury Society, Brain Trust Canada, Southern Alberta Brain Injury Society, Rocky Mountain Adaptive Sports Program in conjunction with URSA, and the Nanaimo Brain Injury Society.

Dave Irwin is an 11-year veteran of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team, and one of the famed Crazy Canuck downhill racers. In March 2001, Dave suffered a severe head injury during a skier-cross training run. Doctors held out little hope that Dave would survive, let alone ski again. But one year after his accident, Dave Irwin returned to Sunshine’s slopes, surrounded by family and friends.

Dave’s head injury was only one in at least 5,000 that occur annually in Alberta alone. Head injury is the leading cause of death and disability for Canadians under 45.

The event has grown over the years, now accommodating 18 children under the age of 18. This year, the top team of Morag Armit and her Tartan Terrors raised $8,700. PEG LALOR ROCKS, from Invermere, raised $8,660 and a team from Okotoks raised $8,560.
